Flash Fiction: Gone Missing

Deinara Salwa Humaira

I wake up with something pushing me inside of my chest. I grab a glass of water, and drink it repeatedly as my chest doesn’t feel better. I had a nightmare last night, something is certainly not right.

I have a class to attend at 9 am, and it’s already 8.45. Today seems so gloomy. It was raining all night last night while I was doing my assignments. About 3 of them. I’m cursing myself for being a procrastinator. I check on my phone and there are 15 missed calls from Diana. I call her, but she doesn’t pick up. I call Claire, it goes straight to the voicemail. Why are my friends being so pretentiously mysterious? I walk hurriedly. Today is a very dreary day. I have no problem with rainy season, actually. In fact, I sort of like it. So that I have my reason to wear sweaters and turtlenecks every day. But today… everything seems so miserable.

I finally arrived at my class. A seat is saved for me by my friends that are already there, Diana, and Rex. All of them look so pale. “where’s Claire and Elli?” that question makes both of them are looking at each other. My forehead frowned. “what’s wrong?” I said. “we’ll tell you after the class ends.” Answered Diana.

The class finally ends and we gather somewhere quiet where there is only four of us. “Claire is gone.” Rex said while bowing his head. “what do you mean by gone?” I asked him and my heart is pounding. “she’s gone… by gone we mean gone forever. Dead. Passed away.” I feel like I’m about to faint. My body feels so numb. Everything seems so blurry. “we were drunk last night. I heard Elli and Claire had a huge fight. Both of them just arrived at my place. I was so drunk, couldn’t remember any detail of it. The only thing I remember was Rex stood up and approached them when Elli pushed her and she hit my huge marble table. I thought I was hallucinating when I fell asleep.” Diana starts to cry. “Where’s she now? And where’s Elli?” Rex and Diana are staring at each other trying to hide something. “Claire’s somewhere in the lake and we don’t know where’s Elli. She disappeared after the suitcase drowned. Someone picked her up and she left.” Diana bowed down her head. “suitcase?” I gasped. “We put Claire inside of a suitcase and we threw her into the lake. Not here, but somewhere far away. I didn’t even know where we were going” Rex stares blankly at the ceiling. “WE HAVE TO DO SOMETHING!” as I scream and burst into tears. “you need to keep quiet. If you tell anyone, we all will be in the same page. Elli threatened us… including you.” Diana stared into my eyes so deeply as if she was trying to comfort me and her own self.

At this moment, I feel like I’m dying. My friends dragged me into something I’m not a part of. Elli has always been the leader. The leader no one picked for. One time, she told everyone she liked Claire the least. I assume that’s the reason Claire is gone. I know I need to do something. I know Claire demands for revenge. I’ll do it. Alone.
