[Review] About Time is a simple treat

Mugi Indah Lestari

Tim Lake (Domhnall Gleeson) is 21 years old. The night after another unsatisfactory New Year party, Tim’s father (Bill Nighy) said something to him that the men in his family have the ability to travel through time. They can’t get to the future, but can only go into the past. Tim can’t change history, but he could change what had happened in his life that he decided to make his world better. Unfortunately, this is not as easy as what he imagined.

He moved from Cornwall to London to train as a lawyer, one day Tim met Mary (Rachel McAdams) a beautiful woman who made Tim fall in love at first sight. But in fact, Tim decided to go back to an earlier time to help a father’s friend, Rory who is having a problem. At that time he succeeded in helping Rory but on the other hand he lost one of the important moments in his life, meeting with Mary.

However, because of his skills in playing with the time, they met again and win the Mary’s heart. Tim made a romantic and perfect proposal to Mary. Then, he used all his ability to save his marriage from the worst things and to save his sister from a car accident. In the last story Tim realized that there are great limits to what can be achieved with time travel and it can be dangerous too. Making the most of life may not need time travel at all.

About time is a light film with romantic comedy genre. The film release dates 4 September 2013 (United Kingdom), 3 November 2013 (United States). Who does not like romantic films? Although the theme is time-travel, but About Time is not a sci-fi movie, and the logics about time travel is sometimes flawed. About Time is a simple film. About Time is just a pleasant distraction for watching.

About Time is directed by Richard Curtis, he was previously known for making movies with similar genre such as Notting Hill, Briget Jones Diary and Love Actually. If we compared to his previous works, About Time is not the best movie.

I my opinion, the possible error actually exist on the plot in the middle of the film. With title About Time, the film tells Tim’s life that can travel through time. First, I suspect that the film will continue to talk about the romantic story of Tim and Mary, but suddenly in the middle of the movie changes the direction of the main story about his family’s life. It’s a little confusing to me. Then, the cover is showed Rachel McAdams and Domhnall Gleeson’s facing the camera sideways, again, I think this story will focus on their love life, but apparently it is not.

The second possibility also exists in the life story of how Tim feels flat. I thought there was going to be a dramatic conflict, however Richard Curtis could not take me to the climax that I expected. Even Tim’s love life is too well. Perhaps because the film plot to be branched and it was described with hurriedly, especially after half the film runs. I also do not feel any bad consequences on how Tim could go back in time and change lives in the future. I think there will be something of a surprise in the story. It’s a little bit boring, by the way.

With a main character that could returning to the past, in mid-film there is a plot that forced when I feel that Richard Curtis seemed to be inconsistent in applying the rules on how Tim could return to the past. Time-travel itself is already ridiculous if we talk rationally, right? But when this is the movie with romantic comedy genre, we should not need to think too seriously.

Beyond that, there was wise conclusion at the end of the story about how we deal with life. Tim learned from his father to appreciate and face the day with an optimistic and happy view, so that ultimately he won’t feel like return to the past and repeat the days over again. It is already a cliché, but I still think it is successful enough to be delivered properly. The comedic element itself mayn’t be too laughter provoking, but still interesting to watch. This film have very catchy musical soundtracks. There is a quotation that I like. Tim said, “We’re all traveling through time together, every day of our lives. All we can do is do our best to relish this remarkable ride,” I agree whole heartedly with him. My favorite part of “About Time” isn’t the love story. When Tim helps his friend, in the premiere of his scabrous friend’s latest production, it was a complete disaster. After an actor goes blank while delivering a big speech, he of course decides to fix it by giving the text in big papers. In one of the scenes, the part where Mary kept asking Tim’s opinion abot the dresses that she’s going to wear an event, eventually she chooses the first dress, out of all the dresses she tried. It seems that Richard Curtis understands womw’s habits.

Talking about the stars, Domhnall Gleeson, one of the actors that I like when he played Bill Weasley in the film Harry Potter and then cast as Jon in Frank (2014) is playing the character in this movie well. The character may be awkward, sometimes creepy, but he is such a typical sweet-guy that every girl will love. The characters are a little awkward however that is the core element of the comedy in About Time. The comedy probably is not that funny, but it is still able to deliver smile. The character Mary, played by Rachel McAdams did seem very flat. Rachel was so cute with her fringe and then I love it in this movie.
